Archetype Group participated in the Hoan Kiem Lake and surrounding areas planning competition, with the master plan and design selected in the 2nd round. The major task was to control the circulation around Hoan Kiem Lake, this was achieved by dedicating one lane for public transport and enlarging the public space along the lake. Except the public transportation lane, the north will be closed for circulation and become an urban public pedestrian square. Under this square that we call Thang Long Square, will be the creation of an underground car park with a capacity of 220 cars. A unique feature designed by Archetype Group is the ‘wave’. The wave is a metal structure wrapped by orange fabric, which protects against sun and rain and becomes by night a lantern at urban scale resembling a dragon. The head of the dragon, an amphitheatre, marks the end of the esplanade and the beginning of Thang Long Square. A temporary landmark tower, Millennium Tower, will be located in the north of the lake. During the day the tower will be a space for exhibition of the history of Hanoi and at night will become a huge lantern. At the top of the tower is a platform, which offers new views connecting the old town of Hanoi in the north and the Hoan Kiem Lake in the south.
