CEO Insight: How Archetype Group Navigates Market Volatility
Pierre-Jean Malgouyres, co-founder and CEO of Archetype Group, on volatility, sustainable design, data centers, AI and the shift to a partner network.
What challenges are shaping international architecture and engineering work today?
The biggest variable in international work is no longer design. It is volatility: geopolitical instability, currency swings and material costs that can change a project’s economics overnight. In our sector the rules of the game are known, which is why we are constantly recalibrating.
At Archetype Group, we have built agility into the DNA of the firm. We are deliberately diversified across services, sectors and geographies, so we never depend on a single market or specialism. When one region slows or one sector tightens, another picks up the slack.
Diversification is not a side effect of growth. It is a strategy. It lets us absorb shocks and recover faster than firms with a narrower footprint.
Which sectors drive success in the international design market?
Green and sustainable design has moved from a “nice to have” to the core driver of our solutions. Clients no longer ask us to add sustainability to a project. We shape it by default on every project, in line with our commitment to deliver 100% green buildings by 2032.
We position ourselves as a leader in this space, not a follower. We invest ahead of the curve in new materials, low-carbon strategies and energy performance, so that when a market’s standards catch up, we are already fluent in what comes next.
The shift from compliance to leadership, backed by training for our teams, is the biggest change of the past few years. It is now the engine behind a growing share of our international wins.
How is the surge in data center demand changing resourcing and project wins?
Data centers have rewritten the resourcing conversation. The scale and speed of demand make specialist engineering talent, particularly in MEP, one of the scarcest resources in the industry. Clients now choose partners based on who has that depth.
That is where Archetype Group is investing. We have signed major data center collaborations across Asia and are building our MEP capability specifically for data center environments: power density, cooling strategy and resilience. We do this with our in-house experts and through strategic partnerships, so we can scale with our clients.
How is AI changing the way Archetype Group works?
AI has changed how we work, but not in the way people usually assume. We have embedded it across every discipline, starting with our architecture department and now extending to engineering and project management.
The value we deliver to clients through AI today is Speed × Agility × Creativity. AI brings speed, through faster iteration and faster analysis. Our organization brings agility, and AI strengthens our ability to move resources where they are needed. Our people bring creativity. AI augments it, but the creative strategy stays with us. AI cannot replace judgment or a sense of beauty. It clears the way for more of both.
How has Archetype Group evolved over the past year?
Beyond the numbers, the biggest shift has been cultural. We no longer think of ourselves purely as a standalone firm. We operate as a network: a community of partners, collaborators and ventures rather than a single closed operation.
We have deepened local partnerships, because clients want us to be their international partner wherever they develop their business. We have signed strong partnerships in sustainable design to stay ahead on new technology and green services. We have invested in startups such as Polaris to strengthen our digital construction management. We continue to explore new business lines beyond our traditional scope, including a new Design & Build offer.
This openness to collaboration, and to ideas that come from outside our own walls, is what matters most to me. It does not appear as a line item on a balance sheet, but it will keep us relevant and resilient for the next decade, and it is already reshaping how we think about growth.
